Crane Drops Building Material On Boundary Wall, Causing It To Collapse And Spill Onto Naxxar Road

Building material fell from a crane earlier this morning and landed between a boundary wall and a building site, causing the wall to collapse into a nearby street.

Photos sent to Lovin Malta from someone onsite shows the devastation caused by the incident on Triq l-Oratorju in Naxxar, leading the road to be partially covered in concrete bricks.

Around 9.30am everyone in Triq l-Oratorju in Naxxar heard a huge ‘bang’,” a person who was on the scene told Lovin Malta. “We all rushed to the windows of our building, which is located just opposite the construction site.”

Photos show how the construction items initially hit the first storey of the building site, which appears to be the Ardent Business Centre, before falling between the boundary wall.

We heard one of the workers shouting to see if everyone was accounted for. It seems like it wasn’t clear with them how many workers were onsite at the time,” the person went on.

Another witness describes how they went on-site to help with the situation but soon came to realise that no-one had any idea what was going on.

“We went out to see if they needed help but when we asked the workers if we should call an ambulance, or if there is someone stuck under the debris, none of them understood us because none of them spoke English or Maltese,” they said.

Lovin Malta was also notified that no one was hurt as a result of this accident, “but this doesn’t excuse the poor health and safety standards that have become normalised in Malta’s construction industry”, another witness told the newsroom.
