Cyrus Engerer Warns Woman MPs Forced Into ‘Submission’ By Political System

Malta’s current political system has “killed the changes” that the gender quota system could have brought about to Parliament, PL MEP Cyrus Engerer has warned.

Engerer expressed his displeasure with the system when critiquing the new law that will allow 16-year-olds to become mayors.

“Malta has the strongest laws giving power to youth. For the past years, 16-year-olds were given the right to vote, now they can also be mayors,” Engerer wrote on Threads.

“This should lead to revolution but I’m afraid it will not. In our political system, ambition leads to submission.”

“The system immediately killed the changes more women could have brought to Parliament. Opting for silence is regretful, yet understandable to advance in one’s political career. Should political careers take precedence over change and conscience? Why politics then?”

Introduced last election, the gender quota mechanism saw Parliament’s size increase to cater for 12 new woman MPs.

These are Alicia Bugeja Said, Cressida Galea, Abigail Camilleri, Amanda Spiteri Grech, Naomi Cachia, and Davina Sammut Hili for PL and Claudette Buttigieg, Paula Mifsud Bonnici, Janice Chetcuti, Julie Zahra, Bernice Bonello, and Eve Borg Bonello.
