Dangerous Driver Spits At And Threatens Police Officers At Bormla Station
A 28-year-old man has been arrested and prosecuted after he spat at and threatened police officers at the Bormla police station last night.
Police Officers’ Union president Sandro Camilleri said the man, Johan Cassar, had been pulled over for over-speeding and not wearing a seatbelt in Birgu by Transport Malta officials. He was later also found to be driving without a license or vehicle insurance and was reported to the police.
Camilleri said the man acted extremely violently inside the Bormla police station, spitting at officers and threatening to kill them all.
Cassar faced several charges in court – including threatening six police officers, spitting at one of them, violently resisting arrest, breaching the peace, dangerous driving, and driving without a license and insurance. He has also been charged with breaching previous court sentences.
The driver, who is being represented by lawyers Franco Debono and Amadeus Cachia, pleaded not guilty and requested bail but this was rejected on the grounds that he wasn’t “sufficiently trustworthy”.
Magistrate Gabriella Vallea recommended that the man be held at Mount Carmel Hospital instead of prison.
This case comes a few weeks after police officer Simon Schembri was mowed down in Luqa and severely injured by a teenager he had stopped for driving without a license.
