Daniel Meli Wins Case Against US Extradition

Maltese national Daniel Meli has won his case against extradition to the US, where he is wanted for selling malware on the dark web.

Meli had initially agreed to extradition following legal advice, but changed his mind after learning about the potential implications. His parents fought tooth and nail against their son’s extradition, and his mother Lucienne Meli gave a heartfelt interview to Lovin Malta where she warned that a prison sentence in the US would be akin to a “death sentence”.

The government reacted by updating the law to allow people who agreed to an extradition 15 days to apply for a review.

Judge Neville Camilleri today ruled that Meli should have the chance to contest extradition proceedings and ordered his case to be reheard in the lower courts.

Meli was represented by lawyers Franco Debono and Arthur Azzopardi.
