Daphne Caruana Galizia Memorials Are Now Officially On Google Maps

Two memorials to assassinated journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia, in Valletta and Bidnija, have officially been registered as landmarks on Google Maps.

The Bidnija memorial has been set up in the exact location Caruana Galizia’s car had ended up after it was bombed last October. The Valletta memorial has been set up at the foot of the Great Siege memorial, strategically opposite the law courts as a symbol that justice has not yet been served for the late journalist.

The Bidnija memorial links to Daphne Caruana Galizia’s blog, while the Valletta one links to the website of The Shift News.

This Valletta memorial has proven extremely controversial, with protestors repeatedly destroying it and adding photos and messages to late Labour Prime Minister Dom Mintoff to it. The entire memorial was removed two nights ago, but was promptly restored by protest group Occupy Justice.

It already has five reviews on Google Maps.

“Both a memorial and a protest site,” one Maltese man wrote. “A memorial to an assassinated journalist and a protest to remind us all that justice has not been done, either in terms of finding those who ordered the assassination or prosecuting the corruption she exposed. Periodically vandalised by those with a interest to obscure the inconvenient truth she exposed.”

“Sitting among Valletta’s historical monuments, this is a moving contemporary tribute, and a pilgrimage site for free speech advocates,” another person wrote. “Visitors should stop here for a few moments to take in the spirit of the struggle for free speech. This is a living memorial. Visitors are encouraged to participate by leaving flowers and lighting candles.”
