Daphne Caruana Galizia TV Series Could Be The Next ‘Chernobyl’, Famed Journalist Says

A planned TV mini-series about the assassination of Maltese journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia could have the same journalistic ambition as the show ‘Chernobyl’, veteran British journalist John Sweeney has said.

“[The assassination] is tragedy for Daphne’s family and for Malta but it’s also a story of big significance,” Sweeney told Lovin Malta. “If you care about the rule of law, democracy and journalism, then what Daphne did really mattered. This is a story of dirty money overpowering democracy, of someone trying to fight that getting killed, and about what we can do about it now.”

Entertainment website Variety recently reported that New York-based studio Topic Studios, in collaboration with U.S. incubator Vespucci Group and Italy’s Indiana Production, is developing a series about Caruana Galizia which will be directed by Israeli filmmaker Noah Stollman.

It will be based on ‘Murder on the Malta Express’, a new book co-authored by Sweeney, along with La Republicca editor Carlo Bonini and Maltese journalist-blogger Manuel Delia.

Topic Studios has an enviable track record, having worked on major productions, such as the Oscar-winning film Spotlight, the documentaries Dark Money and Nobody Speak and the Netflix show Losers.

Sweeney said that the plan is for the mini-series, which is as yet untitled, to have the journalistic ambition of the popular series Chernobyl, which recounts the story of the explosion of a nuclear power plant in the Soviet Union. He added that he hopes Meryl Streep, who has regularly paid tribute to Caruana Galizia, will play a part in the series.
