Daphne Caruana Galizia’s Father: ‘PN’s Opportunistic Mass An Insult To Our Daughter’

Daphne Caruana Galizia’s father has accused the Nationalist Party of opportunism after it announced a mass in his late daughter’s honour.

“The organization of the mass at St Patrick Church this Thursday does nothing to atone for the insults directed at Daphne Caruana Galizia by Adrian Delia, or for the failure by the PN under his leadership to take a stand against corruption in government, in so doing helping to bring about a climate wherein the assassination of our daughter with the prospect of impunity was finally made possible,” Michael Vella said.

“Nor will it atone for the failure by the PN both as political party and Opposition, as led by Adrian Delia, to condemn or to act in any way against the subsequent and still ongoing state-sponsored attempts at obliterating her legacy and her memory and attacks against her family – indeed to the extent of suppressing in the party media reports on such incidents.”

“To us this opportunistic initiative by the PN is an insult to Daphne, our daughter, to all that she stood for and died for – and to all that she still stands for in the war against corruption and for transparency and honesty in government.”

Vella wrote his comment under an article on Manuel Delia’s blog and it was later shared by his daughters on social media.

The mass, organised by the PN Sliema committee to coincide with the two-year anniversary of Caruana Galizia’s murder, will be held at St Patrick’s Church in Sliema at 7pm this Thursday. It will be followed by a speech on democracy and justice by former minister Louis Galea, who has been appointed by PN leader Adrian Delia to oversee a reform in the party.

During his leadership election in 2017, Delia regularly clashed with Caruana Galizia and sued her for libel four times after she accused him of laundering money from a Soho prostitution ring in London. Delia also derided her as a “mere blogger” and claimed she was  opposing his leadership because she was scared that, with him in charge, her grip on the PN would be no more.

After her murder, Delia retracted the libel suits and apologised to Caruana Galizia’s family for his outburst against her, stating he will regret it for the rest of his days.
