Daphne Caruana Galizia’s Lips Slashed On Valletta Banner Ahead Of Five-Year Murder Anniversary

As Malta gets ready for the five-year anniversary of Daphne Caruana Galizia’s assassination, not everyone is pleased that the late journalist is being given so much prominence.

A banner has been erected at the entrance to Valletta to promote ‘Daphne Eroj Maltija’ – a new documentary about Caruana Galizia by Repubblika, Occupy Justice and journalist Manuel Delia that will launch tomorrow.

However, Delia warned that a number of people reacted quite viciously to it, with an unknown person going as far as to slash the lips on the promotional image.

“Even now they hate the memory of her words and want them to be silenced. They are willing to use violence, weapons, just to shut her up,” he said.

And that wasn’t the only instance he encountered.

He said a man growled aloud at the sight of Caruana Galizia’s photo and questioned how “they make a saint out of the woman who wanted all Labour children to die of cancer.”

Although Caruana Galizia never said those words, a fake screenshot alleging she did was circulated on social media after her assassination and it has clearly remained entrenched in the minds of some people.

Delia said that another man, wearing a tourist guide tag, shouted out to him in the middle of Valletta that if Caruana Galizia was still alive, “I’d kill her myself”.

“‘Why would you say that?’ I challenged him. Another soul-destroying loud exchange followed though I should say the man finally acknowledged that even if the things he was told Daphne wrote were true, the death penalty is still disproportionate. He did not, however, withdraw his own perversely posthumous fatwa,” Delia wrote.

Several events have been lined up to mark the fifth anniversary Caruana Galizia’s assassination, including a conversation with renowned British journalist Carole Cadwalladr on 15th October and a silent gathering, protest and vigil on 16th October.
