Daphne Caruana Galizia’s Makeshift Memorial Untouched Overnight As Activists Stand Guard Ahead Of Today’s Republic Day Protest
A group of activists spent the night guarding Daphne Caruana Galizia’s protest memorial ahead of today’s Republic Day protests in Valletta.
The turbulent weather that struck Malta yesterday wasn’t enough to stop these group of activists from venturing out into the pouring rain and protecting Daphne Caruana Galizia’s memorial from being removed by the Cleansing Department last night.
The activists were guarding the tributes left for the late journalist on the steps of the Great Siege Monument opposite the Court of Justice. The vigil started at around 7 pm last night and carried through all the way until this morning, with activists taking turns to protect it. So far, it has remained untouched.
Police were also standing guard throughout the night and erected barriers within the area to safeguard the activists.
A protest is being held this morning in Valletta alongside a Republic Day March, with protestors once again demanding Prime Minister Joseph Muscat’s immediate resignation following accusations that his office has been linked to the murder of Daphne Caruana Galizia in 2017.
