The two teenage nieces of Daphne Caruana Galizia have reacted strongly to Michelle Muscat’s claim that she was more sorry than the late journalist’s family when she got assassinated.

In an interview with MaltaToday, the Prime Minister’s wife said that while Caruana Galizia’s family could “go on to make her a saint”, she would “have to live with the lies” she wrote about her owning the Panama company Egrant.

“Mrs Muscat, can you compare your shock to Daphne’s murder with ours as a family, when our lives turned upside down on the 16th of October, a blur of phone calls and news headlines, not knowing if it was Daphne or not who was in the car, not knowing if she were alive or not?” Megan Mallia, 18 posted on her Facebook wall. “Do you feel as if you suffer from Daphne’s loss more than her parents, who have to live every day with a weight on their shoulders, with a sadness incomparable?”

“Do you believe you suffer more than Daphne’s eldest son who was first on the scene on October 16th, who saw his mother’s car a ball of fire in the middle of a field, and his mother blown apart on the road? Is the loss you feel greater than that of all her three sons, who lost their mother in such a brutal, violent and horrendous manner?”

“Can you compare your grief with that of Daphne’s husband? Can you compare it with that of her three sisters, who grew up with her by their sides, who spent their childhood days with her, and their adulthood, who saw her children grow up?”

“Do you feel Daphne’s loss as my sister and I feel it, who spent afternoons walking with her, or reading together on her sofa after some time spent in her garden? Us two who grew up with her as a role model?”

“Can you feel as great a grief as my aunt’s friends do, who spent the days talking and laughing with her? No, no, no, no, no, no, no and no. You can’t. Do you really, really think that any normal person is going to pity you, Michelle Muscat?”

Her younger sister Amy questioned how the Prime Minister’s wife could have the cheek to pass those comments.

“Can you imagine coming home from school and getting a phone call saying that there was a bomb in Bidnija and trying desperately to call Daphne hoping that she’d pick up the phone and say she was ok? Can you possibly have the guts to say that you felt more grief and stress than her sons and husband felt?”

“Can you say you felt worse than Matthew running out of the house and down the road to see his mother’s car burning and bits of her body on the ground?

“Are you so cold hearted that you could say you feel more of a sense of pain and loss than her parents do, knowing that some horrible, disgusting excuse of a person ordered her assassination?”

“Are you really feeling more of a sense of pain and sadness than her sisters, who she grew up with and shared so much time and memories with?

“Can you imagine how my sister and I are left without one of our aunts? How we won’t be able to spend anymore days with her in her garden picking olives from trees or going to a cafe with her and talking over a piece of cake? Can you imagine remembering the way Daphne was killed every time a firework is let off and having to hold back tears? Can you imagine being hurled insults and threats and other ghastly things you can’t even imagine as you walk on the street?”

“I can answer all of those questions for you, because the answer is simple: no. No you can’t relate.”
