Daphne Caruana Galizia’s Valletta Memorial Survives After Getting Wiped Out Nightly For Months
A Valletta memorial for Daphne Caruana Galizia erected yesterday to mark two years since her assassination wasn’t destroyed overnight.
For several months now, activists have been placing tributes to Caruana Galizia under the Great Siege Monument, only to find out the next morning that they had been removed by government cleaners overnight.
Yet this wasn’t the case last night, and visitors to Valletta this morning were treated to a memorial to the late journalist.
“Today is the first day in literally hundreds that the protest memorial was left untouched overnight,” activist-lawyer Martina Farrugia said. “This is what a normal democratic country looks like. A place where tributes and messages calling for justice for the assassination of a journalist are left out for all to see.”
“Freedom of speech can only be said to exist if you can say uncomfortable truths. Daphne’s murder is a stain on our country’s reputation and our values. Just because it’s an ugly truth doesn’t mean it shouldn’t be said and certainly doesn’t mean we should ignore it and pretend it didn’t happen.”
