Daphne Foundation Network Helps Jean Paul Sofia’s Parents Sue Five People For Damages

Lawyers who form part of a network set up by the Daphne Caruana Galizia Foundation are helping Jean Paul Sofia’s parents sue five people for moral and material damages over their son’s death at a construction site.
The parents have filed a civil case against architect Adriana Zammit, Matthew Schembri in his personal capacity and as director of All Plus Ltd and Whitefrost Company Ltd, as well as Kurt Buhagiar, Miromir Jovicevic and Dijana Jovicevic in their personal capacity and as representatives of Milmar Construction Ltd.
“This case, together with the ongoing public inquiry and criminal prosecution case are aimed at ensuring full justice for Jean Paul Sofia and ultimately protecting the lives of other workers on constriction sites,” a statement from the Public Interest Litigation Network (PILN) read.
PILN was set up by the Daphne Caruana Galizia Foundation in 2021 to provide pro bono legal assistance in cases of human rights violations, discrimination and cases of public interest.
Some of their major cases so far include representing Isabelle Bonnici in the public inquiry into her son’s death, Jaiteh Lamin, a construction worker who was abandoned on the side of the road after suffering a workplace injury, and comedian Daniel Xuereb, who has been prosecuted by police for calling pastor Gordon Manché an “asshole” during a stand-up show.
