David Casa To Step Down As Quaestor To Give Roberta Metsola ‘Best Chance’ In Bid For EP Top Job

Nationalist MEP David Casa will be relinquishing his role as quaestor at the European Parliament in order to help his colleague Roberta Metsola in her bid to become the parliament’s president.

Last week Metsola announced that she would be putting her hat in the ring to become the EPP’s candidate for European Parliament president.

Roles within the EU’s structures tend to be divided as widely as possible across the bloc’s different political groupings and member states, with Casa saying he had decided to give up his role in order to give Metsola the best possible chance of success.

In fact, the EP’s rules prevent individuals from the same political grouping and member state from both occupying a role within its Bureau, which as quaestor Casa did.

“I am proud to be doing my part to give Roberta Metsola the best chance to first, get the EPP’s candidacy and then, hopefully, be our new EP president,” Casa said.

“It is a huge honour for our country and I have no doubt that Roberta Metsola will do us proud. Through this election we stand a chance of having Malta’s interests represented at the very helm of European politics.”

Casa was elected quaestor, another top European Parliament job, in July 2019, becoming one of five MEPs elected for a two-and-half year term to be a part of the parliament’s administration.

Metsola confirmed she would be running for the top job last week after having gauged her support within the EPP.

The deadline for candidates to submit their nomination is today, with Austrian MEP Othmar Karas having already entered the contest.
