The db Group has denied that the government was asked to clean up equipment and trash from a wedding of one of its directors at Mellieħa’s Red Tower last weekend.

A spokesperson for the group told Lovin Malta that its private contractors were already cleaning up the area on Monday when officials from the Cleansing Department arrived on site.

“We categorically deny that any Government entity was requested to carry out works on our behalf,” they said.

“In fact, our contractors were carrying out the cleaning of the site from early morning on Monday. Late in the afternoon, a Cleansing Department truck approached the site, picked up some material and left.”

“No one asked the Cleansing Department personnel to get involved in the clean-up and in fact they spent less than five minutes on site.”

“The cleaning of the site and the dismantling operation are proceeding well and should be finished soon. We remain committed to leaving the site better than we found it.”

The Malta Rangers Unit filed a police report after it found the area around the historic building still cluttered with debris and equipment on Sunday, a day after the wedding.

They said they reported the wedding organisers on Friday “for litter flying around the area during preparation”, again on Sunday evening “for litter being left all over the place” and for a third time on Monday morning “for having breached the 24-hour cleanup deadline as per SL 549.40.”

The db Group said the wedding’s permit specified that the place had to be cleared and cleaned within an “established period” and that their contractors started out the process on Monday morning, the first working day after the event.

Yesterday evening, Parliamentary Secretary for Public Cleansing Glenn Bedingfield stated that officials from the Cleansing Department were sent on-site to clean the area.

“It will be cleaned by our workers, although this job should have been done by someone else. We cannot leave a pile of rubbish lying around.”

“I will be having a discussion with the concerned entities to establish a system that places responsibility on those who organise similar events, and even larger-scale events,” Bedingfield wrote.

He continued, “No more lack of respect and no more pushing away responsibility. Our country deserves to be clean.”
