Degiorgio Sentences Shows Justice Taking It Course In Daphne Caruana Galizia Murder, Prime Minister Says
Prime Minister Robert Abela insists that the sentencing of Alfred and George Degiorgio for the assassination of journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia proves that justice is taking its course in Malta’s courts.
The Degiorgios were sentenced to 40 years in prison after pleading guilty almost five years after they were initially arrested for the murder.
They are the second and third persons to be sentenced in the case, with Vince Muscat pleading guilty around a year and a half ago. Yorgen Fenech, Robert Agius, and Jamie Vella are awaiting trial.
However, there remain many damning allegations against persons who are yet to be charged, including former Prime Minister’s chief of staff Keith Schembri and former Deputy Police Commissioner Silvio Valletta,
In an address during a political activity, Abela described the murder as the “ugliest episode in Maltese history”, insisting that it was crucial that the country never forgot about the assassination.
He used the recent sentencing as a springboard to praise his government’s work in introducing or proposing reforms to the judiciary and media sector to address major issues. However, both were mandated by either international authorities or a public inquiry linked to the murder.
“The reforms are the clearest signal we can give to ensure what happened five years ago will never happen again,” he said.
“But we cannot stop here.”
