‘Discrimination Of The Highest Level’: Mother Calls Out Gozo School For Not Allowing Boys To Wear Earrings

A mother has called out a school in Gozo after her son was told that only girls were allowed to wear earrings in school.

“My son pierced his ears with some school mates this summer and turned up to school after the summer break just to be told ‘only girls are allowed’,” the mother told Lovin Malta.

“That is discrimination on the highest levels, and we are in 2019….. Equal this, equal that, if you get my drift.”

When the problem was raised to the head of the school, she apparently said: “Yes, it is discrimination, but so what?”

“Seriously? What kind of answer is that?” asked the mother. “I was shocked by her lack of common sense. Does it hinder a boy’s education more if he has studs in his ears compared to a girl wearing them? Of course not… My daughter has two earrings in each ear, not a problem… But my son has two small studs hardly visible and was told take them out.”

Boys that continued to wear earrings in school were told that they’d get their jewellery confiscated if they showed up at school wearing them.

The mother has reached out to the Educational Board to report the incident.

She believes that if boys aren’t allowed to wear body piercings, girls shouldn’t be allowed either in the name of equality.

“Many parents are frustrated, including myself, and we demand equal rights or no one should be allowed to wear earrings in school, it’s that simple! The rules don’t say ‘only girls can wear earrings. It states ‘no body piercings!'”

She called for a change to these outdated rules so that Maltese students can stop “living in the dark ages”.
