‘Disgraceful’: Strait Street Chefs Forced To Cook By Lamplight After Days Of Power Cuts

A number of restaurants have been left in the dark – literally – for days as their section of a popular Valletta street remains without electricity.
“We had a packed house on Saturday night, in the middle of service – and the power goes out,” one chef of a popular Strait Street restaurant told Lovin Malta. “We had to pull out the lamps just to cook and keep everything going.”
The power cut comes as works are being done in the historic ‘Red Light District’ road – but with power outages for days, chefs and restaurateurs have been left without a clear timeline on when they can expect to return to normal.

Another neighbouring restaurateur told Lovin Malta that “thousands of euro have been thrown away” over the last week.
“Loads of bookings cancelled, time wasted running around Valletta asking any friends who still have electricity if we can use their fridges, chip fryers broken, ACs have to be changed due to the damage… taħwid, and not even a phone call from anyone in authority.”
When Lovin Malta asked if they expected any compensation from authorities over this sudden and unplanned loss of revenue, the answer was simple: “as if”.
