‘Disgusting’: Major Backlash After Gospel Singer Says ‘Disability A Result Of Sin’ On TVM

A Maltese programme discussing religious groups in Malta and their beliefs which aired on TVM last night has led to widespread criticism over one speaker’s views on the true origin of illness – sin.

On a panel on TVM show Popolin, gospel singer Phylisienne Brincat speaks to host Quinton Scerri about her views on illnesses and disabilities, ranging from people with cancer to Down Syndrome.

“So, whoever is sick, it’s coming from sin?” Scerri asks.

“It’s not just in them, but from generation to generation. Isn’t that how sin entered, by way of Adam?” Brincat replies.”Let’s start from the beginning. God created us perfect. God didn’t create us to die.”

“And a couple who have a disabled child? That’s the result of sin?” Scerri responds.

“It’s from generation to generation. It is written so. When we are born, we are born under the mark of Satan because the world became cursed once sin entered.”

After the show aired, Inclusion Minister Julia Farrugia Portelli called Brincat’s words “disgusting”.

“You have no idea how many people you’ve hurt,” she said, saying this was nothing more than “religious fanaticism”.

But soon enough, other individuals took to social media to express their reaction to Brincat’s explanation on the origins of illness.

“Instead of saying these kinds of things that can hurt so many people, you try to help these people. If you truly love and believe in God, He told us to help, love and respect others, and not judge, lie and create stories that do not make any sense.”

“Phylisienne, you should be shy of the God that you preach to after saying these things.”

Others, included mothers of children with disability, couldn’t help but jump into the comments section to share their reactions.

“Thank God my youngest daughter isn’t hearing what you are saying as you’d cause her so much pain telling her that her sister is a result of sin… look at us, she means the world to us, and then some idiot like yourself comes along and tells us she is a result of sin…”

During another part of the show, River of Love Pastor Gordon Manche recounted how he saw Jesus Christ, which served as inspiration to eventually open the controversial Maltese religious community.

Do you think Brincat’s take on sin and illness is on point or is the backlash justified?
