Do Not Leave Deckchairs Out Overnight If You Care About Environment, Maltese Ranger Warns
An HPF ranger tasked with protecting a key environmental area in Malta has issues a warning to anyone operating a deckchair business across Malta, Gozo and Comino.
“To all sundeckchair operators being blessed to leave sundeckchairs out during night time (crazy stuff) – may this not be what is seen on a morning patrol somewhere along our beaches,” Cami Appelgren said as she shared an image of a turtle trapped under a deckchair.
Appelgren, an HPF ranger who patrols Majjistral Park, has made a name for herself promoting and supporting Maltese environmental laws. Now, she wants to warn operators before a tragedy occurs.
“If we really wish to safeguard the marine life and other wildlife this wouldn’t be allowed. Your convenience isn’t more worth than their well-being,” she said. “Be considerate. Show us that you indeed care and opt for sustainable business practices.”
And she made it clear she wasn’t sure why deckchairs would be left out overnight: “I can’t find even one reason for anyone to be allowed to leave sundeckchairs out during night hours or if there is no demand from the public.”
Environmental experts have long warned about the potential dangers of leaving deckchairs out overnight, with plastic deckchairs turning into major obstacles for turtles, especially nesting turtles and hatchlings.
And it’s not just deckchairs – abandoned beach chairs can entangle turtles, trapping them, sometimes in a fatal manner.
