Do Not Swim: Balluta Bay Contaminated With E. Coli, Warning Issued Against Swimming

The Superintendent for Public Health has issued a warning against swimming in Balluta Bay, due to “the presence of microbiological contamination”, including E. coli and I. Enterococci.

These bacteria can cause significant issues for one’s health.

In a statement, the Environmental Health Directorate within the Superintendence of Public Health said that they are investigating the source of contamination, and the duration of the contamination cannot be predicted at this stage.

Swimming is not recommended until further notice.

One of the most common sources of E. coli contamination in water is untreated human sewage. If a sewage treatment plant has an overflow or septic system leaks, untreated sewage can make its way into nearby waters.

Illegal dumping or improper disposal of waste can introduce E. coli to waterways.

Another cause could be waste from boats that is not properly treated, adding E. coli to the water. If swimmers with diarrheal illness enter the water, they can also introduce E. coli and other pathogens.
