Done And Dusted: Fabio Spiteri Completes Superhuman Trek To Aid Abandoned Animals In Malta
Merging his love for sports and animals, super-athlete Fabio Spiteri completed an astounding 1,300km trek in aid of animals who are abandoned in Malta.
“I’ve gone to unknown territories of physical and mental challenges to reach that finish line,” Fabio told Lovin Malta.
In no less than 111 hours, he managed to cover a 19km swim, a 900km cycle, and an insane 211km run (the equivalent of five marathons) – all under the scorching summer sun.
Donations continue to pour in, with Fabio managing to reel in over €32,000 to aid animal shelters and cat feeders around Malta and Gozo.
People will be able to donate up until the end of July, with hopes of hitting a target of €100,000. The sum will be distributed across shelters to help them resolve outstanding issues, particularly those tied to a lack of space and resources.
The race, a World Cup race nevertheless, saw Fabio end in seventh place globally and second within his age group (of 45 – 50 years).
“I have a great passion for animals. In fact, I have 13 pets myself,” Fabio added. “It is my great wish that people help me reach my goal of €100,000 so that all animals in Malta can find a roof over their heads.”
He thanked his main sponsor – Hill’s Pet Nutrition and dedicated his win to Jack Schiavone, a renowned Maltese cyclist who recently lost his life. “He gave me valuable tips in cycling. Fligh high Jack.”
