‘Don’t Believe The Rumours’: Malta’s US Embassy Says It Isn’t Closing Down

The US Embassy in Malta has sought to quell rumours that it is at risk of closing down as part of a cost-cutting plan.
“Don’t believe the rumuors: US Embassy Malta is not closing. We continue to operate normally and proudly represent the American people,” the embassy tweeted.
It spoke out after US media outlets reported that an internal State Department document had recommended the closure of 10 US embassies and 17 US consulates.

The 10 embassies reportedly proposed for closure are based in Malta, Luxembourg, Lesotho, Eritrea, Grenada, South Sudan, the Maldives, the Central African Republic, the Republic of the Congo, and the Gambia. According to the document, the embassies’ current duties could be covered by outposts in neighbouring countries.
The document also proposes the closure of five consulates in France, two in Germany, two in Bosnia and Herzegovina, one in the United Kingdom, one in South Africa and one in South Korea.
