The HPF Rangers Unit has issued an important warning this morning about sea safety, after a terrifying late-night rescue of a drowning girl from Golden Bay.

“Yesterday there was an incident late at night at Golden Bay where the Patrolling Ranger of HPF Ranger Unit on duty and Angelique from the Wildlife Rescue Team Malta encountered a situation where they had to assist to pull up a seemingly lifeless person from the water,” the Rangers shared on social media.

“We are happy to hear that the person in question is in hospital with minor complications but will recover. This is mainly due to the person’s friends being there to support and acting swiftly,” they said.

“Our Ranger on-site was coincidentally trained in first aid and lifeguard rescues and could, together with the volunteer of Wildlife Rescue Team Malta assist the person in need and call for an ambulance,” they explained.

“We wish to extend a thank you to Mater Dei ambulance personnel and other medical professionals who assisted the group overall in the aftermath of this incident,” they said.

Following the announcement, the HPF Rangers shared a couple of tips to keep in mind when visiting the beach – especially when under the influence of alcohol.

When you visit the beach…

1. Make sure you surround yourself with people you trust and who would be able to assist if you encounter yourself in a challenging situation.

2. Refrain from swimming if you’ve been drinking alcoholic beverages.

3. Malta Red Cross Lifeguards are on site until 18:00 every day during the swimming season. After this, be extra cautious and especially when it is dark.

4. Currents and sea conditions may be deceiving at times. Make sure to stay safe and learn about how to.

The HPF Rangers also advised the general public to attend First Aid courses, to be able to know what to do in case one stumbles across a similar situation, where someone’s life may be in their hands until an ambulance arrives.
