Dozens Of Gżira Residents Band Together Against Endless Roadwork Delays

Dozens of Gżira residents came together to protest endless roadwork delays that have plagued an arterial road for a year and a half, with no end in sight.

Works on Triq Manoel in Gżira began in February 2022, and excavation was done to lay new services and create the base for the pavement.

Nearly two years later, the road is still incomplete, there is no safe pavement, and dust bellows the road and air. Businesses on the 200m stretch of road were forced to close their doors while residents were forced to walk on uneven paths and inhale toxic air.

The excavation is in its second phase, and the responsible entity is Public Works, which currently falls under Minister Stefan Zrinzo Azzopardi.

“Until now, we still don’t have definite information about the progress of the excavation and when the works will continue,” Mayor Conrad Borg Manche said yesterday on Facebook, clarifying that the delays have nothing to do with his council.

“It’s inconceivable and unacceptable that a street of just over 200 meters would take all this time to be completed.”
