A number of traffic officers are set to be arrested today after Maltese police concluded weeks of investigations into an alleged major racket revolving around officers’ overtime.
Times of Malta reported that a whistleblower had uncovered the racket to authorities, which has been going on for months now, after which police began investigating dozens of traffic officers
The investigators are now ready to move into the next phase of investigations and arrest the abusers, police said today in a statement.
It is believed that a number of officers were receiving overtime benefits and bonuses for work they never did. The officers are expected to be questioned today, with some set to face criminal charges in the coming days and weeks.
During this time, a contingency plan has been put into place to ensure that Malta’s roads remain overseen by the same amount of officers that are to be arrested.
The police force also assured the public they were taking “every measure according to the law” in the investigation.
