The driver involved in a car crash that left a pole and service room severely damaged in a tunnel linking St Julian’s and San Gwann fainted right before the collision.

“The driver fainted, and swerved to the right, passing through the light pole and straight into the room,” an eyewitness told Lovin Malta.

Saying the driver was “driving normally, but slow” at first, the witness said he believed that the man fainted due to the heat.

“He came back to his senses a few minutes after and he was okay,” he continued. “First responders came within a few minutes and everyone stopped to help. Malta is great.”

Police confirmed with Lovin Malta that the driver had suffered a medical complication, and was taken to Mater Dei after awakening from fainting.
