Drivers Who Switch To Scooters Will Receive €1,500 A Year For Four Years
Starting next year, the government will roll out a number of incentives to encourage people to choose transport alternatives to private cars.
People who surrender their car driving licenses and switch to a scooter for four consecutive years will receive a €1,500 grant per year, amounting to a total of €6,000.
Specific eligibility criteria will be announced when the scheme launches next year.
Transport Minister Chris Bonett said in Parliament that scooters should be viewed as part of the solution to tackling Malta’s notorious traffic problem.
“We must start viewing cars as one out of several options,” he said. “Many people drive a car with no passengers, taking up the same space on the roads as four scooters. The more people choose scooters, the better.”
In another scheme, the government will give €5,000 a year for five years to youths who give up all their driving licenses (including scooters).
Meanwhile, 17-year-olds who opt to get a scooter license and delay getting a car license until they’re 21 will receive €1,500 a year for four years.
