Drowning Under Cars? Malta Could Soon See One Vehicle For Every Single Person As Figures Continue To Rise
The National Statistics Office has published a report showing that the number of cars in Malta has continued to increase. The document reports that in 2017, Malta had 782 cars per 1000 residents.
This is significantly higher than the numbers for 2010, which came in at 747 cars per 1000, detailing an increase of 35 cars per 1000 residents across the seven years. As Malta’s population has also been growing steadily, the total increase in cars is likely even higher than what these statistics show at face value.
In fact, the NSO report shows an increase of around 60,000 registered vehicles between 2011 and 2017
The ratio of cars to people in Malta has been significantly higher than the EU average for some years, with the 2010 data presenting an EU average of just 602 cars per 1000.
All of this is despite the fact that Malta also has the largest bus fleet per capita in the European Union.
