Police prevented 31 kilos of cannabis from entering Malta via the Sicily catamaran last night after finding the drugs concealed in the false bottom of a van.

Two Romanian brothers, aged 19 and 21, who don’t live in Malta, were arrested and will be prosecuted in the coming hours.

According to TVM, the Maltese police had been tracking the brothers for around a month after receiving intelligence that they were smuggling drugs into Malta from Spain.

Police reportedly found out that the brothers had a contact person in Malta, who agreed to leave a van parked for them in Qawra. The brothers picked up this van, crossed over to mainland Europe and drove all the way to Barcelona, where a false bottom was installed in the van to conceal the drugs. After picking up the drugs, the brothers drove back to Sicily and caught the catamaran, but were apprehended by Maltese police as soon as they arrived late last night.
