Drunken Tourist Breaks Head Off St Julian’s Hotel Statue

A 22-year-old Italian man has been handed a one-year jail term, suspended for three years, after admitting to breaking a stone statue in a St Julian’s hotel while drunk, causing damages estimated at around €10,000.
TVM News reported Daniel Truscelli brought down half of the statue, including its head, in the early hours of the morning after hanging from it.
The court heard the incident happened when he went to use the bathroom and decided to grab onto the statue, an act described as a “youthful folly.”
Truscelli, who appeared in court on crutches after part of the statue fell on him and fractured his leg, apologised for his behaviour and was ordered to pay for the damages within six months.
The case was presided over by Magistrate Astrid May Grima.
Inspectors Nico Zarb and Christian Xuereb prosecuted, with lawyers Giuliana Magro Conti and Nicholas De Gaetano from the Attorney General’s Office.
Lawyer Jason Azzopardi appeared for the defence.
