‘Getting Help Is A Nightmare’: Maltese Student With Dyslexia Forced To Wait Two Months For Driving Theory Exam Reader
A student with dyslexia has been waiting for over two months to get a reader assigned to aid with this driving theory exam.
His concerned mother reached out to Lovin Malta to try and find a solution to the matter, emphasising that this whole ordeal is causing him great stress.
“Two months ago, my son applied for a reader at Transport Malta for his written driving test, as he has dyslexia and finds it difficult to read. His instructor has already told him he is ready for his driving test,” the mother explained.
“We know there is a waiting list but we got no response, not even an email,” she lamented.
“He has gone to try the theory test four times already. He got six mistakes cause he couldn’t read one question, and eight mistakes in the rest,” she said.
“This is putting him under a lot of stress. His reading disability is something that he has to deal with every day but now even to get the help he needs is becoming a nightmare,” she stressed.
“Candidates who are unable to read and write and or have some form of the condition that hinders them from doing the Theory Test can apply with Transport Malta to be assisted by a representative of the Authority”, the official website explains.
The assistance provided will be restricted to the reading of the questions and possible answers in either Maltese or English.
However, no indication of how much time it takes for this assistance to be provided is indicated.
Lovin Malta reached out to Transport Malta to get a comment on the matter.
“Transport Malta has no details of the candidate in question, so no further feedback can be provided.”
“Nevertheless, we are providing the equivalent of around 10 hours of assistance, two days, per week. This will be further increased in the coming days,” a Transport Malta representative stated.
“Apart from such assistance, we also provide translators in various languages who are also sharing the same premises together with other applicants.”
“It is also worth mentioning that there are some candidates who, although providing contact details on the related form (DE 002 – https://www.transport.gov.mt/include/filestreaming.asp?fileid=7340) are very difficult to contact for setting up an appointment for such assistance.”
