The government has announced a €100 million fund to accelerate Malta’s adoption of artificial intelligence and digital technologies, in a major push to modernise both the public and private sectors.

The fund, made up of national and EU resources, will support businesses developing or implementing AI systems, as well as training schemes to build digital and AI skills across the workforce.

Addressing Parliament on Monday, Finance Minister Clyde Caruana said the government said the initiative aims to strengthen Malta’s technological competitiveness and promote wider use of automation and data-driven tools.

AI Training For Workers And Civil Servants

Part of the new funding package will go towards AI and digital training programmes for workers and professionals. Government departments will also begin integrating AI systems into their workflows, in a move officials say will help reduce bureaucracy and improve efficiency.

This forms part of a broader data integration reform, which includes the creation of a central data repository linking compliance, due diligence, and KYC information across government agencies. The aim is to cut duplication and paperwork by allowing departments to share verified data securely — a reform long promised and now said to be at an advanced stage.

€500 Digital Grants For Students

In education, students in Year 10 and Year 11 will receive €500 grants to purchase digital tools, laptops, and equipment. The initiative is tied to the rollout of AI-focused courses over the coming years, ensuring that students have the hardware they need to take part in digital and AI training.
