Ten projects led by local NGOs have been awarded funding to help strengthen national efforts against gender-based violence and domestic abuse.

The selected initiatives, receiving between €3,000 and €10,000 each, will be carried out by November 2025 as part of the Together We Empower programme, launched by the Commission on Gender-Based Violence and Domestic Violence in collaboration with the Parliamentary Secretariat for Equality and Reforms.

In total, 17 organisations will be involved, with several of the projects carried out through partnerships between NGOs.

The programme, which amounts to €100,000 in funding, aims to build stronger collaboration between the Commission and the voluntary sector while continuing to raise awareness about domestic violence, Parliamentary Secretary for Equality Rebecca Buttigieg said.

She described the initiative as another step in implementing Malta’s third national strategy against domestic violence, titled Ningħaqdu, Ninvolvu, Nelevaw – which focuses on unity, engagement, and empowerment.

“Through this kind of collaboration, we can work together to bring about a cultural shift — one that breaks stereotypes and challenges abusive dynamics,” Buttigieg said.

Commissioner Samantha Pace Gasan noted that the funded projects will address a wide range of issues tied to domestic violence, including education for children and the elderly, research into hate speech and prostitution, and support for both survivors and individuals at risk.

She added that the Commission will be working closely with each NGO to ensure these efforts contribute meaningfully to national awareness and prevention efforts.

The ten selected projects are:

  • TAMA – TAMA
  • Safe Spaces, Strong Voices: Art for Empowerment – LGBTI+ Gozo (in collaboration with artists Abi MacLeod and Alda Bugeja)
