A statue of the late former prime minister was put up in Paola’s gardens – which are also dedicated to him.

The polarising ex-prime minister, who passed away in 2012, is depicted in a typical pose, clutching a stone with one hand, and gesturing with the other.

Mintoff was admired by his followers, but loathed by his critics.

The monument cost €170,000 – with the Local Government Division funding 60% of expenses through a capital projects program, while the rest was settled by the Paola Council.

The local council commissioned artist Alfred Camilleri Cauchi to work on the statue.

Parliamentary Secretary Alison Zerafa Civelli commended the council for its initiative and dedication to the project.

Dominic Grima, the Paola Mayor, announced that the council has plans to inaugurate several additional endeavours, such as gardens and new community services, in the upcoming months.
