€2 Million Worth Of Cocaine Seized From Malta Freeport

A 37-year-old man from Xgħajra has been arrested following a major drug bust at the Malta Freeport that saw police seize over €2 million worth of suspected cocaine.
The operation, carried out in the early hours of yesterday morning, was the result of ongoing surveillance by the Maltese Police with support from Freeport security officers. At around 5.45am, a vehicle exiting the port was stopped as part of an investigation into drug importation into Malta.
Inside the man’s vehicle, police discovered seven kilograms of what is believed to be cocaine. But the search didn’t stop there. Further checks within the port area led to the discovery of an additional 28 kilograms of the suspected drug, bringing the total to 35 kilograms with an estimated street value of around €2 million.
The drugs are believed to have been removed from a container that arrived in Malta via the man, who is employed at the Freeport. Police suspect he had hidden the packages with the intention of smuggling them out gradually.
A magisterial inquiry has been launched under Magistrate Dr Ian Farrugia LL.D., and investigations are still underway.
The suspect is expected to appear in court today at 11:30am before Magistrate Dr Astrid May Grima LL.D.
