A man was given a fine in the thousands as part of a court case over a physical altercation involving the police.

The man was hauled to court for assaulting and slightly injuring two police officers after being drunk in a public place. After being charged over the attack, he pleaded guilty.

During his sentencing, he was given a six-month prison sentence suspended for one year along a €4,000 fine.

Attacks of police officers are alarmingly regular, with figures showing that one person is charged with either threatening or assaulting a police officer every single week.

Figures in 2019 showed that that between 2013 and 2019, 505 people were charged with either threatening or assaulting a police officer.

It should be noted that the number of charges does not reveal the full picture, with some cases involving multiple officers. In fact, 103 officers were either assaulted or threatened in the first eight months of 2019.
