A new Italian Netflix production is being filmed in Malta, making use of the island’s massive water tank facilities.

Isola Delle Rosa will follow the story of Giorgio Rosa, who was the president of the micronation of Isola Delle Rose right off the beaches of Rimini in 1968.

The man-built 400m island had its own government, language, coins and flag, and the Netflix film is set to follow the story of the Italian state trying to come to grips with this newly independent state right on its shores.

“A Netflix production currently being shot and produced at our unique water tank facilities at the Malta Film Studios,” said Chris Busuttil, a Malta Film Commission official. “We are committed to a self-sustained film infrastructure; servicing back-to-back pipeline of productions.”

Directed by Salerno-based Sydney Sbilia and written and directed by Francesca Manieri, shooting of the new show began on September 16th in Italy. After filming in Malta ends, shooting will continue in Bologna and Rimini.

The film has a budget of over €8 million, and is expected to be ready by Autumn 2020 to be distributed in 190 countries.
