Editorial: Lovin Malta Is More Than Just EuroPride’s Media Partner – It Is An Ally
EuroPride Valletta 2023, the biggest annual event celebrating diversity, equality, and the progress of the LGBTIQ+ community across Europe, is fast approaching – and Lovin Malta couldn’t be prouder to stand alongside this vibrant movement.
Against the backdrop of an ever-improving national rights landscape, we eagerly anticipate the big strides and transformative moments that lie ahead for the LGBTIQ+ community in Malta and beyond.
It’s been a long journey – anyone who has watched Lovin Malta and ARC’s production Equality From The Heart knows the pain, suffering, and trauma previous generations of the community had to live through to get to where we are today – ranked number one for LGBTIQ+ rights across Europe for the eighth year in a row!
As a platform that has always made minority and fringe issues a core area of focus, celebrating EuroPride Valletta 2023 is a natural step for us.
Having been at the forefront of minority issues since our launch back in 2016, we’ve seen firsthand the changes the country has made.
But it would be a mistake to think we have arrived – and anyone checking the comments section under some of our articles over the years would know.
Even in 2023, so much more needs to be done; just this week, Lovin Malta published an article supporting an inclusive conference for people who menstruate. A few weeks earlier, we reported on a TikTok influencer saying there are only two genders while on a podcast.
Both of these stories revealed the vitriol still present on the island, as well as a real need for more empathy towards the real-life situations some Maltese citizens face every single day.
Amidst all of that, there have been missteps and mistakes, but we will always look to improve and grow to continue being the leading media platform campaigning for open conversation and debate that leads to social change and inclusion on the island.
While we are a platform that is and will remain open to all points of view from every sector of society, we are also proud to have always championed the causes we personally feel strongly about and that we feel need additional safeguarding.
EuroPride Valletta 2023 is more than a celebration of Malta’s incredible LGBTIQ+ progression – it is a celebration of love, which comes in all shapes and sizes.
With just months to go before the big event, you can expect Lovin Malta to be at the core of the LGBTIQ+ experience in Malta – not just as official media partners, but as allies in this never-ending fight for recognition and representation.
