Edwin Vassallo Announces He Will Run As An Independent MEP Candidate
Former PN MP and Mosta mayor Edwin Vassallo has announced he will contest the upcoming European Parliament election as an independent candidate.
“The values of life, family and freedom have never been as threatened as they are now, and all decisions are taken on the basis of money alone,” Vassallo said in an announcement video. “Although the economy appears strong, no one cares about how these values are being steamrolled over. Something must be done.”
Vassallo has been critical of Malta’s political scene in recent years, telling Lovin Malta last year that the fear of offending others and subsequently losing votes is sterilising Maltese politics.

“In politics it’s the thought that counts and the values you have that make you unique,” he said.
“However, it’s as though no one wants to express themselves because they might hurt someone and lose more votes than they will win.”
“However, it cannot be that we don’t express ourselves out of fear that we will lose. You need the courage to express yourself; otherwise your politics is just image-wise and there’s no substance in politics built on image alone.”
Vassallo becomes the fourth person who has announced their intentions to contest the election as an independent candidate, joining James Ryder, Arnold Cassola and Żaren tal-Ajkla.
