‘El Chapo Ta’ Malta’ Out On Bail After Partner Claims He Threatened Her With Acid Attack To Face And Breasts
Accused drug trafficker Jordan Azzopardi, aka El Chapo ta’ Malta, returned to court this Monday following a domestic violence claim made by his partner and mother of five.
“All it will take is €20 worth of acid to peel off your face, breast….” is what Azzopardi allegedly told his partner following a domestic incident that stemmed from a fight over cleaning up.
Azzopardi was first apprehended nearly a year ago after a police chase in Madliena and was released on bail a few months later. His notorious reputation, resulting from his involvement in drug production and his propensity for dodging law enforcement, is well-known.
The recent charges stem from a domestic dispute that occurred over the weekend. His girlfriend reported to the Domestic Violence Unit that Azzopardi had threatened to throw her off a balcony and had inundated her with menacing voice notes after she left the house.
The argument, as stated by prosecuting inspector Audrey Micallef, originated from a disagreement about cleaning up dirty footprints.
However, it soon spiralled out of control, leading Azzopardi to allegedly brandish a knife and threaten to throw his girlfriend off a balcony. The woman spent the night in her car out of fear.
The threats extended beyond her safety. She reportedly received 16 voice messages between 1am and 11:45am, filled with alarming threats. Some of these even concerned the woman’s children, who are not fathered by Azzopardi.
Azzopardi also allegedly threatened to expose intimate footage of the victim to her children, to embarrass them into not going to school. Some of this footage was uploaded to his Telegram chat without the woman’s consent.
Upon the police’s arrival at Azzopardi’s residence at 6.55pm on Sunday, he was arrested, read his rights, and escorted to the police headquarters. He chose to exercise his right to remain silent after consulting with his lawyer.
The charges levelled against Azzopardi include insulting and threatening his girlfriend, causing her to fear violence, publishing intimate footage without her consent, causing grievous bodily harm, breaching prior bail conditions, and relapsing. He pleaded not guilty to all charges.
Due to the nature of the charges, the remainder of the hearing was conducted behind closed doors after the victim’s lawyer informed the court that she was willing to testify immediately.
Despite the severity of the charges, the court granted Azzopardi’s request for bail under several conditions, including a deposit of €500, a personal guarantee of €5,000, and signing the bail book.
As Azzopardi’s trial unfolds, it serves as a stark reminder of the interconnection between various forms of crime and highlights the ongoing challenges law enforcement face in battling both drug trafficking and domestic violence.
