‘Eligible For A Darwin Award’: Emergency Doctor Slams ‘Dangerous And Stupid’ Flipping Of Sliema Car
A Maltese emergency doctor has called out the individuals who took it upon themselves to flip an overturned car that was involved in an accident in Sliema.
“I hope all of us understand that this was extremely dangerous and stupid!” Michael Spiteri said today after footage of the crash scene was revealed by Lovin Malta.
“Flipping a car with its occupants inside is extremely hazardous, not to mention the fact that the car was entangled in a mess of potentially live wires and with a damaged 8 meter pole to spice up life,” he continued.
Spiteri couldn’t help but point out what should have been done by those who were near the accident: “The role of a bystander is to call 112 for help, give us the exact location of the incident, type of incident, visible hazards and estimated number of casualties.”
Footage taken at around 10.30pm along the Sliema Promenade showed a group of people overturning a Range Rover Evoque that was being driven by a 29-year-old man from Siġġiewi. It had overturned after colliding with a Peugeot 308 being driven by a 39-year-old male Pakistani residing in Santa Venera.

Thankfully, none of the drivers, nor the passenger in the Range Rover, were injured in the incident – but Spiteri slammed the reckless attempts at helping possibly injured parties.
“If safe to do so, First Aid may be given without moving the patients (unless there is imminent danger). Extrication and dealing with a dangerous scene should be left for those who are properly trained and equipped,” he pointed out.
“Failing the above might make one eligible for a Darwin award,” he ended, in reference to the famed ‘Survival Of The Fittest’ evolutionary scientist Charles Darwin.
