Maltese Employer Fined €7,000 For Unsafe Conditions… For An Accident That Happened Eight Years Ago

A director of a construction company was just fined €7,000 for various shortcomings related to health and safety in the workplace, leading to an employee suffering from grievous injuries.

What’s most striking, however, is that the accident occurred more than eight years ago, in September 2014.

On the scene, a number of shortcomings were identified, such as a lack of risk assessment evaluation, safety nets, protective wear, medical attention, and a disregard for the expertise offered by the project supervisor.

The Maltese director, who has not yet been named by OHSA, was found responsible for the aforementioned shortcomings, as well as accidents that could have occurred as a result of said deficiencies.

He was also found guilty of not preserving health and safety on the construction site, as well as giving his employees very low pay that fell beneath the minimum wage.

He also failed to provide special equipment for works being done from a high area, as well as setting up handrails around stairs and safety harnesses.

The fact that it took such a long time for a fine to be administered paints a clear picture of how slow justice is in Malta, as well as the need for health and safety remaining dire.

Throughout the last eight years, not much has changed when it comes to health and safety on Malta’s construction sites, with accidents being reported on a weekly basis.

Just last week, a construction worker suffered life-threatening injuries after falling a storey and a half on a construction site in Rabat.

Do you think justice reform is needed in Malta?
