The employer who was filmed assaulting Olandu John Bright has been filmed again trying to bribe the Nigerian worker to withdraw his police complaint.

In a video seen by Lovin Malta, the refuse collection employer, together with his lawyer and with the intervention of at least one police officer, John Bright was offered a cheque of €700 on condition that he dropped the case.

John Bright said he would accept being paid his dues on the condition that it included taxes that he wants to pay himself.

However, he said he would not drop the court case after the employer assaulted him, severely underpaid him for his work and accused him of stealing €250.

“The only way I know that tax is paid is if we sign a work contract for me to pay tax and we terminate the contract immediately after,” John Bright insisted.

“You want the money? Then it’s finished,” the employer replies urging him to hurry up and drop the case.

A police officer is then seen stepping in to try mediate the escalating situation. He says that this is a civil matter and has nothing to do with the police.

“[Your ex-boss] is offering two options: either accept the money and drop the criminal case against him or continue with your case but you won’t receive the cheque,” the officer explained.

The 25-year-old Nigerian asylum seeker went viral in Malta after a video emerged showing his boss hitting him with a shovel and displaying aggressive behaviour after Olandu demanded his full salary.

He claimed he worked from 6am to 4-5pm for 21 days for the refuse company in question, and only earned €250 during this time, or €1.20 an hour, and ended up quitting, unable to fund his own transport to work.

However, when the company was approached for their comments, they claimed that the worker had only worked for them for 18 days instead of 21, and had stolen €250 on the day he quit his job.

A fundraiser was set up shortly after the video, in which over €2,000 was collected for John Bright.

Meanwhile, Malta’s Department for Industrial and Employment relations opened up an investigation into the shocking assault.
