Enemalta Says Power Cuts Caused By Trip In Regasification Plant

After a number of localities around Malta experienced power cuts this morning, Enemalta said this was due to a trip in the Delimara regasification plant.
“This morning a trip in the regasification plant developed,” a spokesperson for Enemalta told Lovin Malta.
Regasification is the process whereby liquefied natural gas (LNG) is converted from a liquid into a gas.
“At that same time the interconnector was undergoing planned maintenance works in Ragusa so a small part of the load was switched to other alternative sources. Our engineers and technical staff managed to address the issue instantly and supply was restored to customers in a matter of minutes.”
Malta was plagued with power cuts last summer and all eyes will be on the authorities to ensure the situation doesn’t repeat itself.
Besides extensive trenching works to add kilometres of underground cables to Malta’s electricity grid, en emergency power plant is planned for Delimara to serve as a backup in case one of the country’s main electricity supplies suffers damage during peak demand.
A tender adjudication process is underway, and The Shift News has reported that United Equipment Company Ltd (UNEC), a branch of Bonnici Group, is set to win it after submitting the cheapest bid.
In January, the Planning Authority also approved the construction of a second interconnector between Malta and Sicily.
