And internal inquiry carried out by Enemalta has confirmed yesterday that the power cut on Tuesday afternoon was the result of damages to equipment in Ragusa, specifically the Interconnector that connects Maghtab to Ragusa’s substation.

The island was hit by a power cut during one of the most turbulent days in recent history, sending the majority of the island into darkness for at least 3 hours.

Enemalta said that the damages had occurred at 2.39pm, on the Malta-Sicily Interconnector, which caused the substation to automatically shut down as a means of protection in the safeguarding of Enemalta’s equipment.

The inquiry went on to reveal that at the same time that Sicily took damage, the generation plant in Delimara was struck down by a voltage cut resulting from the damages in Ragusa, explaining that the plant’s failure was not due to a lack of frequency but instead was a result of the voltage cut from Sicily.

Enemalta closed their statement by stating that electricity services were back to normal for the majority of localities in Malta and Gozo by 5.49pm and that by 6.52pm provisions were back to normal everywhere.
