‘Enjoy Watching Us Destroy Your Career And Marriage’: Letter To Maltese Magistrate Revealed
The contents of the anonymous letter sent to Magistrate Nadine Lia have been revealed by the Association of Judges and Magistrates of Malta.
“We told you to remove yourself. Now enjoy watching us destroy your career and marriage. Are you happy? Next time obey just like the others do. Omerta Si. Sfidare No,” the letter read.
Lia, the daughter-in-law of former Prime Minister Joseph Muscat’s lawyer Pawlu Lia, received the letter days after she refused to recuse herself from a case related to claims against Pilatus Bank.
Her refusal led civil society pressure group Repubblika to file constitutional proceedings against Lia, saying it constitutes a breach of its right to a fair hearing before an impartial tribunal.
Lia’s father-in-law is the lawyer of several Labour party exponents and also sits on the Commission for the Administration of Justice, which contributed to the calls for her recusal.
The letter has been condemned by many, including Repubblika, with the Association of Judges and Magistrates of Malta saying:
“Members of the judiciary should be allowed to carry out duties in a serene way and without any form of pressure or fear for their own safety or that of their family.”
