Environmentalists Condemn Vandalism At Mosta Archeological Construction Site
The machinery at the construction site in the Giant’s Clearing area (Wesgħa tal-Ġganti) in Mosta’s was vandalised last night. The site, which features megaliths and a potential hypogeum, is being developed into a showroom and apartments, but workers this morning showed up on site to see red paint on their machinery.
The phrase “Planning Authority Mafia” was sprayed onto the windows of the heavy vehicles. Red paint was also thrown onto the windscreens. Earlier this week, environmentalists had raised questions about developing this site, saying that could yield further important archeological discoveries.
However, they have already condemned last’s night’s vandalism.
Environmentalists denounced the vandalism outright, and have asked how the vandals can expect anger like this to bring about any real change. The destruction of machinery and the use of vulgar language would not be beneficial to their arguments, which were for the protection of the environment.
However, others felt like not enough was being done to protect Malta’s environment.
Police arrived on the site early this morning, and investigations are still ongoing.
The site in Mosta was deemed to be of “low archaeological value” by the Superintendent of Cultural Heritage, but it was still recommended that “monitoring” of the site as it was being developed should take place.
Some have said that no monitoring is taking place, giving the construction workers free reign. This site was included in the Development Zone back in 2006 as part of the rationalisation exercise.
