Watch: EP President Roberta Metsola Welcomes Italy’s New Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni
European Parliament President Roberta Metsola welcomed Italy’s new prime minister Giorgia Meloni to the European Parliament in Brussels.
Meloni was elected as Italy’s prime minister in the last weeks, after claiming victory in the latest general election.
“Today in Brussels, I welcomed Italy’s new Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni to the European Parliament for her first visit to an EU institution,” Metsola wrote on social media.
“We had an open and constructive conversation on the challenges that all Europeans – including Italians – are facing. On skyrocketing energy prices, on spiraling inflation, on Europe’s response to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine,” she said.
“We know that if we remain united, we will find solutions. That we are stronger if we are together.”
Meloni’s election sparked concern across the continent given that Fratelli d’Italia had risen out of a post-war movement that emerged from Benito Mussolini’s Fascist Party.
However, she has softened her image ahead of the election, diluting her party’s anti-EU rhetoric and emphasising her support for Ukraine.
