EU Parliament Refers Request To Lift Daniel Attard’s Immunity To Legal Affairs Committee

The request to lift the parliamentary immunity of Maltese MEP Daniel Attard was formally announced in the European Parliament on Thursday evening, placing him among five MEPs currently under investigation by Belgian authorities.

European Parliament President Roberta Metsola told MEPs during the plenary sitting that she had received official requests from Belgian authorities to waive the immunity of Attard and four others: Salvatore De Meo, Fulvio Martusciello, Nikola Minchev, and Giusi Princi.

The request has now been referred to the Committee on Legal Affairs, which will assess each case, summon the MEPs to provide their version of events, and issue a recommendation. The final decision will then be taken in a vote by the full European Parliament.

While the process is typically lengthy, sources say it may be fast-tracked — especially since Attard himself has publicly requested that his immunity be lifted to allow him to clear his name.

Attard was recently named in a Belgian bribery probe after attending a football match in the company of a Huawei lobbyist. He insists he was unaware that the invitation came from a lobbyist and has denied any wrongdoing.

Lovin Malta sent questions to Attard on Monday, but they have so far gone unanswered.

Martusciello, one of the other MEPs named, has previously been linked to the investigation after his parliamentary assistant was arrested earlier this year.

Lifting the MEPs’ immunity would allow investigators to formally question them and potentially access documentation or communications relevant to the case.

Attard has vowed full cooperation with the authorities, saying he is confident the investigation will confirm his innocence.
