Eve Borg Bonello, Youngest MP In Maltese History, Comes Out Strongly Against Abortion Bill
Eve Borg Bonello, the PN MP who recently became the youngest Maltese MP in history and likely the youngest sitting parliamentarian in the world, has reiterated her pro-life stance in a speech against the proposed abortion bill.
In a speech in Parliament yesterday, Borg Bonello made reference to the large protest that took place on Sunday and accused the Government of purposely creating a misleading bill.
“The legal amendment is designed to be abused,” she warned, expressing her fears of an “abortion on demand” situation.
She said that while the PN is united against the bill, the PL is divided, referring to criticism by President George Vella and his predecessor Marie-Louise Coleiro Preca, both former PL politicians.
She accused the Labour Party of lying to the Maltese people by displaying pro-life sentiment prior to the election but now changing its stance on the issue.
Borg Bonello went on to accuse the PL government of doing little to help mentally ill people and of now using such patients as pawns to gain momentum on the abortion issue.
Quoting Giovanni Bonello in his former role as judge in the European Court of Human Rights, she stated that abortion has never qualified as a fundamental human right.
Borg Bonello defended the current system, affirming that doctors are not penalised if they prioritise the woman’s life over that of the embryo.
She said that in these cases, the mens rea (intent) is not present and these doctors are therefore not penalised. In the last 200 years, no medical professional has ever been charged with a crime for saving the mother in drastic cases.
